Applying for Low Income Housing

It is no secret that buying a home is every person’s dream. Demands for affordable housing has been increasing, in spite of the rise in the level of economic activities that led to an economic expansion during the 1990s. Those who come under the low income level find it difficult to afford a house in any of the major cities. As per the generally accepted definition of affordability, a household should not pay more than 30% of its annual income on housing. Exceeding this limit means that the family is facing difficulties to afford other necessities like, food, clothing, medical care, etc. But today, around 12 million homeowners and renters pay more than 50% of their annual incomes for housing. In such a situation, it is difficult for a family with one full-time worker earning the minimum wage to afford a decent apartment. Even if they become successful in finding a home, they have to strive hard to meet their other basic needs.

     Types of Low Income Housing

The government has started various measures to address the problem of shortage of affordable homes. If you are in the low income group, and you are facing difficulty in finding a house, you can apply to the concerned authority of the state you live in for a subsidized home. As per the US Government policy, there are three types of low income housing, and you can qualify for any one of them according to your annual income. The first type is the subsidized homes, which are privately owned. The rent of these homes, owned by private persons or companies are subsidized by the government to make it affordable for low income groups. The second type is the houses owned by the government itself, and are meant for the low income groups. The third type involves a check from the government, called housing voucher, which is meant for the purpose of paying rent. All you have to do is to apply for a low income housing at the earliest.
