Budget Decorating and Redesigning with Paint

When you enter a room you are invariably struck by the mood of the space. If you stop to think about what is creating this mood, you will quickly realize that color is a big piece of it. Many different studies have been conducted to determine how color affects people, and as it turns out it can actually change your mood.

How you use color in a room sets the tone for the entire space. For example, a cool grey or an icy blue that feels frigid when used alone, instantly becomes crisp giving the space definition when combined with warm earth tones of brown and yellow.

One of the quickest and most complete ways to change the look of a room is to repaint it. Before choosing your colors think about the impact that you want the room to have on any visitor. Do you want to promote a peaceful and tranquil feel? Would you prefer cozy elegance? Maybe lively and energetic would be more appropriate. Whatever tone you choose can be applied to any surface of the room including ceiling, walls, trim, floor and even furniture.

Wall Color Magic
If you want to bring a room to life, red hues bring up the energy in a room; so adding a red accent wall to your dining room will not only bring it to life, but it also stimulates appetite. Coupling it with hues of warm brown and cream finishes the dramatic look of the room by giving it a warm and comfortable feeling. Adding sage green walls to your living room can help relieve stress and create a soothing atmosphere as well as providing the perfect canvas on which to display your beautiful dark wood furniture. Neutral shades can be combined to create either a very formal room or a very casual room depending on the textures and tones selected.

Trim Transforms
The impression that a room makes as you enter it can be altered very simply by changing the color of your trim. By painting trim a light and contrasting color you will highlight the detail of the room. When you paint trim darker it gives the room a traditional feel. If you go for a more monochromatic look, it will open the space and showcase your furnishings.

The ceiling can have an equal impact on your room. A contrasting, light ceiling makes the room feel taller while a monochromatic ceiling keeps the room feeling more cozy and intimate. So depending on the overall tone of the room, simply changing the ceiling color can have a huge impact on the look of the space.

Don’t Forget the Furniture
When you are painting a room, certainly do not overlook painting your furniture. If you have mismatched pieces of furniture, a coat of paint may be just what they need to bring them together. You can even paint a portion of the furniture like legs on a table or chair to connect them visually.
